E-verify Must Be Used by All Federal Contractors

E-Verify will soon be required of all federal contractors. Many state legislatures are also enacting state laws mandating employer use of E-Verify.  Federal (and in many states, state) contractors are now required to participate in the E-Verify program to confirm employment eligibility.  Although E-Verify is an extension of and improvement for the existing I-9 laws all employee, it is also directed at illegal immigrant work authorization.

Federal Compliance – No Easy Task

One of the most cumbersome, but least understood, are the requirement of federal and state contractors to comply with affirmative action recruitment and hiring policies, But ignorance of the rules and regulations is no excuse. And a company found to be out of compliance with the complex rules can be hit with penalties or lose their government contracts.

Responsibility For Federal Contracts

The Annual Report of the White House Task Force on the Middle Class — released recently by Vice President Joe Biden — states that the government is planning a Responsible Federal Contracting policy to provide more stringent standards for the contractors that employ “tens of millions” of workers.

Is E-Verify Between A Rock And A Hard Place?

Is E-Verify meeting all of its expectations? As of this writing, the Department of Homeland Security [DHS] has made the E-Verify program mandatory for most federal contractors [effective 9/8/2009.] It has also been a voluntary program for all employers since 1997, which DHS is now utilizing aggressively, along with other enforcement measures.

E-Verify Alert: What Federal Contractors Need to Know About the New E-Verify Compliance Requirements

By now most contractors that do business with the federal government are aware that starting September 8, 2009 federal contractors and subcontractors may be required to use E-Verify to verify the employment eligibility of their workers. On September 1 a coalition of business organizations, including the Associated Builders and Contractors, filed for an emergency injunction to block the new E-Verify rule pending the outcome of an appeal before the Fourth Circuit challenging the rule’s validity.

E-Verify Mandate Begins Today For Federal Contractors and Subs

Developed by the Bush administration, the mandatory use of E-Verify, a computer system for employers to check their workers against the Social Security database, is another example of the Obama administration’s emphasis on enforcing the immigration laws to keep illegal immigrants from living and working in the United States. However, the administration has yet to press for a comprehensive immigration reform plan that would legalize some of the immigrants already living and working here.

Federal contractors required to use E-Verify beginning Sept. 8, 2009

WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is reminding federal contractors and subcontractors that effective Sept. 8, 2009, they will be required to use the E-Verify system to verify their employees’ eligibility to work in the United States. In July, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano strengthened employment eligibility verification by announcing the administration’s support for the regulation that will award federal contracts only to employers who use E-Verify to check employee work authorization.

No More Delays; DHS Mandates E-Verify For Federal Contractors Starting September 8

Starting on that date, federal contractors and subcontractors will have to use the government’s E-Verify system to ensure that all employees who work on federal projects are legal. E-Verify – which compares information from the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) with federal government databases to verify employment eligibility – is a free web-based system operated by DHS in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA).
